Small Firm, Big Results: Why a Boutique Firm is Your Best Option

When considering a law firm to represent you, it matters who you choose. Many large firms will advertise that they can do it all because of their size — but this is not always better for the client. In many situations, a smaller, more focused firm may be the right fit. If you’re looking for a lawyer that can give you the attention, time, and expertise you need, consider a small firm with a consistent track record for success.

Benefits of Working with a Small Firm

From personalized attention to in-depth expertise, there are plenty of benefits to working with a small legal firm.

Direct Access to Senior Level Attorneys

Large firms boast the manpower to do it all. However, more often than not, that means that only the biggest cases get proper attention from senior-level attorneys. You may not have direct access and conversations with the experts handling your case. With a small firm, you have open communication with the team handling your case. They can help you with case issues large and small, and you have direct access to the right people to handle your needs as they arise.

Personalized Attention

What can you do when you have questions or concerns related to your case? A small firm can dedicate the time and resources to helping you with all of your needs, so if you have questions, we can answer them. If new problems arise, you can discuss them right away — with attorneys who are already familiar with you and your legal case. You are more than a number when you work with a small firm; you are an important client with a dedicated team that is determined to help you with your legal needs.

Specialized Expertise

Law is a massive field, and no one lawyer can be a true expert in everything. When your case requires specialized legal knowledge, your best option is a law firm that has specialized expertise. When you need legal assistance for an environmental matter, you need a law firm that has experience and in-depth knowledge of environmental law. Large general firms may not have any lawyers with specialized environmental expertise, which means one of two options:

  • Your lawyer will need to refer your case to an expert.
  • Your lawyer will need to familiarize themselves with the relevant laws as they build your case.

In either option, your lawyer will not be providing the in-depth, contextual expertise that is demanded by specialized fields such as environmental law. Ultimately, you need a law firm that is dedicated and ready to help with your unique needs — and one with deep expertise that is relevant to your case.

Davis Environmental Law: Small Firm, Big Results

Davis Environmental Law is a New Jersey-based firm that has specialized in environmental law for over 20 years. Our small, focused team overcomes the advantages enjoyed by powerful adversaries with strategic vision and scrupulous attention to the needs of our clients. Unlike the environmental law departments at large law firms, we choose each of our cases and clients. And once we do, we commit to representing them with creative enthusiasm. Vagueness and cynicism have no place, and our goal is always excellence. In this vein, every client relationship begins with a clear and thorough conversation: we listen, research and fully analyze each client’s unique situation and, just as important, explain in comprehensible language the legal issues as we read them. This process creates cooperation and creativity; it is the bedrock of our exceptional record of success.

We are especially proud of the recent $17.5 million settlement that we negotiated on behalf of homeowners with polluted groundwater in Nutley and Clifton, NJ. See Sutton v. Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc., 245 N.J. 251 (2021) (denying leave to appeal from an order granting class certification, which was affirmed by the Appellate Division). In that case, among other interim litigation victories, we clarified the burden of proof for class actions in New Jersey. See 2020 WL 2745404 (App. Div.).

We have won many cutting-edge legal battles, using judicious strategy to vindicate our clients’ rights and claims in trial and appellate courts, including the United States Supreme Court. See, e.g, Huber v NJDEP, 213 N.J. 338 (2013); 562 U.S. 1302 (2011)) (Statement of Alito, J, joined by Chief Justice Roberts, and Justices Scalia, and Thomas, pursuant to denial of petition for certiorari); TAC Assoc. v. NJDEP, 202 N.J. 533 (2010); Schoneboom v. Allstate New Jersey Insurance Company, 2020 WL 1322828 (App. Div.).

Our work outside of the courtroom is equally rewarding. We have obtained multi-million dollar settlements from some of the nation’s largest insurance companies to facilitate the cleanup of contaminated properties. We regularly navigate our clients through negotiation, execution and completion of remediation projects under State and federal government oversight, sometimes eliminating penalties and enforcement actions that were threatened by government regulators.

We treat every case and client with the full respect that they deserve. Are you looking for an environmental law firm that can help you with your legal needs? Reach out to us; we’d love to have a conversation.
